The Stop Coach
An app that helps you
stop smoking
23% of the adult Dutch population smokes. Every year 19,000 people die as a result of smoking. Many smokers want to quit, but only 8% of smokers succeed. Support can help people do just that.
By order of the Trimbos Institute, Pharos and the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) we developed The Stop Coach: an app (iOS and Android) that helps people quit smoking. The app guides users to quit for 8 weeks and is based on the StopAdvisor application, already proven effective in England. The app is only used in combination with personal counseling. The starting point for the development was to provide advice tailored to the wishes, possibilities and problems of the smoker.
Testing with the target audience
An important target group of The Stop Coach are people of lower socioeconomic status, who are more likely to smoke. Therefore, we took this group into account in the design, content and operation of the app and tested it frequently with them. The app works with a digital coach and responds to problems that people who want to quit smoking encounter, such as debt and stress.
